London / EuroWire / – Recent joint scientific research reveals how human-induced global warming is directly responsible for the extreme arid conditions currently affecting Europe, offering clear proof that climate change is worsening drought situations across the continent. The international research team concluded that rising temperatures are the primary cause behind the intensely dry environment, surpassing the impact of mere reductions in rainfall. Following a historic heatwave in June, the region now faces severe wildfires, stringent water restrictions, and shrinking waterways. The study shows that the increased temperatures today cause soils and water bodies to lose moisture at a much faster rate, significantly heightening the risk of extreme dryness. Although spring rainfall fell below historical averages, the heat generated by climate change intensified the drought’s overall severity.

The World Weather Attribution team published findings illustrating how escalating temperatures are actively depleting natural water sources. Mariam Zachariah from Imperial College London explained that the drought is not mainly due to reduced rainfall but is driven by a warmer atmosphere that creates greater moisture deficits on land. This means that even in areas where rainfall patterns remain stable, drought risks continue to grow. Scientists point out that for each 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor rises by about seven percent. This heightened capacity directly accelerates evaporation from soil and vegetation, leading to more severe drought conditions across landscapes.
By analyzing extensive weather datasets and utilizing sophisticated computer models, researchers compared today’s hotter conditions to a climate that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their results show that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to experience extreme dryness than in a world without human-driven warming. Similarly, in eastern Europe, these same soil moisture deficits are 11 times more probable. The study further indicated that the likelihood of exceptionally high evaporative demand during April to June in western Europe increased by about 80 times. Consequently, rainfall deficits that previously would not have caused severe drought now produce much drier soils.
Temperature Rise and the Atmosphere’s Growing Thirst
Dominik Schumacher, an expert from ETH Zurich, highlighted the early signs of intense soil drying seen already in spring before summer’s arrival. He explained that as temperatures climb, the atmosphere’s capacity to extract moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils accelerates rapidly. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for large wildfires. This rapid drying process primed the landscape for ignition, contributing to widespread fires across multiple nations. The study reinforces that climate change intensifies drought in Europe and is shifting traditional weather patterns into highly dangerous and unpredictable cycles.
The agricultural sector is under unprecedented pressure as critical soil moisture diminishes nationwide. The drought is causing severe hardships for farmers, leading to historic crop failures across borders. France is projected to record its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, signaling a major disruption in regional food supply. Meanwhile, Romania has lost more than one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortages, combined with ongoing global conflicts, risk driving up food prices and disproportionately impacting low-income households.
Enhanced Water Vapor Capacity Due to Rising Heat
Water-related impacts are intensifying the economic damages, with abnormally low river levels disrupting critical cargo shipping routes. Major disruptions along vital waterways reflect the escalating severity of the continent’s water scarcity crisis. Reduced flow in large rivers threatens energy production, particularly in regions reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service verified that the recent June was the hottest on record in western Europe. Many nations are already enforcing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential drinking water use to conserve dwindling supplies.
Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions are likely to become even more frequent. They emphasize that these intense evaporative patterns are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the urgent need for action. Should global emissions push temperatures up to 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative extremes could double. Without swift and decisive emission reductions, experts warn Europe faces a future with increasingly scorching and arid summers that could persist year-round.
